In Wanting to Show You the Morning Rain

by Helen Pletts

which I am now a part of. This morning I am in dew light

with the white and weeping willow who has lost a tiny yellow speck

that closer up is a seed lighter than water,

lighter than me but both of us are even lighter now,

seed yellow afloat and level with my toes.

If I open my mouth the pool will feed me like a hungry gully,

the air is grey electricity about my wet hair and then the pouring begins.

I keep my mouth closed and the surface sings with silver,

I have never actually been the rainfall in water,

dry land is all inhabited

but water in a storm is particles of free light in the painted blue

that falls deep into me before returning in a perfect tear

and it is this tear that I have become.

The wind has found the depths

and curls about my legs,

yellow willow curls are scattering and seeding water

and I become the surface, as each twig and leaf is falling,

matched by these spinning tears

that are as much a part of the air as the water,

and in all of this is my ecstatic dolphin face

like an iceberg moving through the frozen wasteland.

At first I shout out like a stray cold gull,

as they pass the red umbrellas to the lifeguards.

You lie awake in the bed of the moving landscape in the slow darkness,

the camels are shifting their hooves in the dark desert as they hear the oncoming train.
